The Estevan Area Literacy Group is a local non-profit group founded in 2007, with the mission of providing early childhood, family, workplace, and Aboriginal literacy, and English as an Additional Language programs.   Literacy is no longer defined as simply the ability to read and write. It now includes the nine essential skills individuals need to succeed at work, learning, and life: Reading Text, Document Use, Numeracy Writing, Oral Communication, Thinking Skills, Working with Others, Continuous Learning, and Computer Use.

The EALG offers programs including Talk Time, an English conversation circle; Family Learning Olympics, a set of family literacy games and activities; Come Read with Me, a program that uses children’s books as a starting point for developing literacy ; Nature Smarts, a summer children’s literacy program; the Estevan Community Settlement Committee Guest Speaker Series; two annual potlucks; literacy workshops; and other literacy program and activities.

The EALG provides settlement services to Newcomers in Estevan. Our Estevan Welcome booklet is available in English and English-Korean editions. Volunteers are currently translating the booklet into Hindi and Spanish.
